The Evil Eye
Among many people and cultures, the fear of the evil eye persists as strongly today as in ancient times. It is believed that men and women can possess the evil eye and direct its negativity toward those who invoke its wrath. A vast array of charms, spells, and incantations for the purpose of warding off evil influences has been passed down from generation to generation.
This lecture will offer a cross-cultural study of the evil eye concept with stories, accounts and illustrated examples from the old world and current day.
About Antonia Santangelo
Antonia M. Santangelo teaches Anthropology and Archaeology courses at Lehman College. She is a Doctoral Candidate in Anthropology at the CUNY Graduate Center. Her research involves ichthyo-archaeology, Black Sea studies, food, identity and sustainability. In addition to her academic interests, Antonia enjoys Zumba, AntiGravity yoga, Krav Maga, dancing and creating art.
