Kokedama: Make Your Own Living Moss Balls

Kokedama: Make Your Own Living Moss Balls

Originating in Japan, kokedama are living plant and moss balls. Traditionally displayed sitting, they also look magical bound up with string and hanging. Similar to bonsai, they are a lovely way to bring a bit of greenery indoors and can live for years.

In this hands-on workshop you’ll have access to all the materials needed to make your own beautiful kokedama and will be taken step by step through the unique process. Everyone will make two kokedama to take home with them at the end of the night.

What to bring

PER PERSON MATERIALS LIST (for 1 kokedama; double for 2): • 1 x small plant (just about any plants work fine, but no larger than 4” pot size. Indoor plants like ferns, ivy etc work well, and also herbs) • ½ cup sphagnum moss • 1 ft natural cotton twine • 1 cup potting mix (approx.) • 3 cups peat moss (approx.) • a piece of ‘sheet moss’ measuring around 8 in x 8 in • 12 ft poly/mason twine (i.e. not cotton) for hanging – I usually use something like this: http://www.amazon.com/NYLON-MASON-TWINE- 18X550-TWISTED/dp/B00080O198 We’ll also need scissors, a few empty buckets, one or two buckets of water, and a spray bottle filled with water. Both trash cans up front. Tables covered with plastic trash bags to keep the dirt from getting everywhere. Each table gets a bowl or two
