There are lots of things to celebrate about September 15th! The HMS Beagle (with Darwin aboard) reached the Galapagos Islands, Marco Polo was born, and the Soviets sent the Zond 5 to orbit the moon and come back.
Most importantly, though, is that summer is leaving us for an entire year.
SO LET'S BARBECUE ABOUT IT.
Saturday, September 15th. Bat Haus's wonderful Bushwick backyard. There will be BBQing, board gaming,...

I'm not quite sure why I was making Caramel Bacon Popcorn on a hot day in August, but here we are.
This was the first time I've made it, and all of the internet's recipes seemed to have a few things in common, none of which I really wanted to incorporate into my quick, lazy version:
1) The caramel sauce contained corn syrup, sometimes a lot.
2) You're supposed to measure the temp of the caramel with a candy thermo...
I had never heard of freezer pickles until a few weeks ago, when we picked up a copy of Linda Ziedrich's book, The Joy of Pickling. We had lots and lots of cucumbers but were mostly out of pint jars and so needed another way to keep them all from turning to mush right before our eyes. Luckily, we stumbled onto Chapter 8 and our minds were blown:
Pickles you store in the freezer? It doesn't seem right, but we're h...

A couple weeks ago, we were the recipents of an awful lot of pickling cukes, thanks to our CSA's canning share.
Of all the kinds of pickles we ended up making (and yeah, there were a ton), I was most excited to turn these guys into new pickles - a lovely salty/crunchy/tangy pickle that's not too sour and not too sweet. I'm a big fan not only because of the taste, but because they are the laziest kind of pickle, an...
If you're like us, you might have a hard time remembering whether it's Roosevelt or Randall's Island that has all the sports fields, or which island Typhoid Mary was imprisoned on, or basically anything else about NYC's many confusing islands.
This happens to us far too often, so we decided a cheat sheet was in order. Below you'll find a teeny guide to some of the most interesting and talked about islan...
